Subject: Whine Noice From Rear Axle (Diagnose and Replace Rear Propeller Shaft
With New Tuned Torsional Damper Rear Propeller Shaft)

Condition
Some customers may comment on a elight axle whing
heard only on deceleration or coast conditions. Tha
nolee peaks at about 77 to 83 knvh (48 to 52 mph}
before quisting at about 72 kivh (45 mph).
Cause
“Inherent” ring and pinion gear whins.
All gear driven units, such a3 aukomotive rear fodes,
produce some level of nolse that cannot be eliminated
with conventional adjustrents and repairs. "Inherent"
ile noiga can ba described as a slight nolea heard
only at a certaln speed {typically batwean 72-96 knvh
(45-60 mph). The prasenca ol this noise Is not Indicative
‘of a functional concem with the axle assembly,
However, some customers may find that this “Inherent"
axle nolse Is unacceptable.

Correction
important:
* if the noise is not correctly dagnosed as “inherent”
and having a peak in the narrow speed range
of 77 bo 63 Iovh (48 to 52 mph) on deceleration or
coset conditions, the addition of a tuned torsional
damper propaller shaft can aggravate the
perceptible noe lgvel. It ip extremely important to
first diagnose the rear axle nolss as “Inherent”
before Installing a new tuned torsional damper
propeller sheft Refer to the applicable diagnostic
information in the Rear Drive Aade subsection of
Service Information.
« The new service propeller shafts ara only dasignad
to correct the noise condition described above,
They will not be effective If repair attampta are made
# correct other noise conditions. If propeller shalt
replacement is needed for any other reapnor, the
exleting service part number propaser shaft should
ba used.
Replace the rear propeller shaft with a new tuned
toralonal damper propeller shaft using the applicable
past number listed below. The new propeler shaft
Incomporates a damper assembly to lessen nolea
tranemitied from the rear exte assembly. The new
propeller shatl should be used ONLY after diagnosis
concludes that It Is an “Inherent” rear axde nalse and no
physical damage or Incerrect adjustment exists. Refer
to the Propeller Shaft subsection of Service Information
- for reer propeller sheft replacement procedures.
