PCM REPROGRAMMING FOR

COLD ENGINE MISFIRE (V6 GALANT/ECLIPSE) 9 |" _Ostober, 2002

This bulletin supercedes TSB-02- 13-075, issued August 2002,

PURPOSE

Incorrect PCM software parameters may cause a mistira condition when the angine is cold, setting
Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) P0300 through P0306 in the PCM. Repragramming the POM as described
in this bulletin will eliminate this condition.

For only Galant V6 vahicles produced bafore 11/1/00, replace the spark plugs after reprogramming
the PCM. (See Step 14 in this bulletin.)
AFFECTED VEHICLES

1999-2002 Galant madels equipped with V6 engine
2000-2003 Eclipse models aquipped with V6 engine, except 2005 Eclipse GTS:

p> 2001-2002 Eclipse Spyder models aquipped with V6 engine

PROCEDURE

BATTERY VOLTAGE (45 MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD)
MUST BE 12.4V OR HIGHER IN CRDER TO REPROGAAM THE PCM.

1. Check the underside of the hood to verify that there is no label te indicate that this TSB
reprogramming has already been dene,

2. Use the MUT-II to erase all DTCs set in the PCM.

3. Use the MUT-II to read the ECU part number, then refer to AttachmentA to determines tha

@ With the MUT-II connected, tum the ignition key to ON.

b. At the MAIN MENU, select “1. System Select” and press Yes.
c. Select “MFI” and press Yes.

d. Select “Mitsubishi MFI" and prass Yos.

8. At ihe OBD-I check code screen, press Yes.

f. At the Readiness Tests status screan, press Yes.

g. At the MFI Malin Menu screen, press S.

h. At the Check Code screen, press the right arrow.

i. The ECU part number and ROM ID will display, Note the part number and refer to the tabla
in Attachment A of this bulletin to select the appropriate ROM pack database number.

4, Disconnect tha MUT-1. and tum the ignition key to OFF.

5. Gather the following reprogramming equipment:

Reprogramming Cartridge (red label) MBg91711
256 KBYTE IC Memory Gard (red) MBS91717
ROM Pack fred label MBSS1701 (use the appropriate
database number listed in Stap 5)
“Engine Compartment/Contro! Module” Labels Part No. MSSF-024G-00

IMPORTANT

Dealers must update ROM packs as needed, depending on vehicle repair requiraments for PCM
software updates.

For instructions on updating ROM packs using MEDIC, and for current database Information:
1) From the MEDI: Main Manu, select “MUT-Il ROM Peck Ra-write.”

2) Select "HOM Pack information.”

When updating the ROM packs for this bulletin, use the following passwords:

6. Install the red label interface cariridgs to the MUT-IL. Then Install the 256 KBYTE red memory
card and the red label ROM pack. Use AL na

7. Reconnect the MUT-0. Connect bot? ine 16-pin and the 12-pin data link connectors.
8. Turn the ignition key ta ON.

| A. CAUTION

DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE
PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE
PCM REPROGRAMMING.

§.° For manual transmission models, select “MFI’.

For gutomatic transmission models, select "MFI &
ELC -A/T." Then press “YES”.

NOTE: The MUT-II will take a few seconds to verity
tha ROM-ID.

10. Ifthe PCM has already been reprogrammed, the
MUT-II will display “This ECU has already besn re-
programmed.” i this message displays, STOP!
Do not continue with this procedure.

11. H the PCM is unable te be reprogrammed, the MUT-II will display “Haprogramming is not possible
on this FOU. " if this message displays, verify th that the correct ROM pack Is installed.

a. H you replace the PCM, be Sure to verily that the new POM has the latest software. After
installing the new PCM, follow the instructions in Step 3 to read the ECU part number and
AOM ID. Then compare this Information with the latest PCM software database information
on the Diamond Dealer Link and In MEDIC. Reprogram the new PCM if necessary.

12. If the PCM can b@ reprogrammed, the MUT-1 will display, “Do you want to repragram this ECU?"
