J2534 reprogramming, independent repair shops must purchase a subscription through the official Hyundai Tech Info website to access the necessary Hyundai J2534 Reprogramming and Diagnostic Tool software and calibration files. A compliant J2534 pass-thru device is also required.
Software and Subscriptions
To perform J2534 reprogramming on Hyundai vehicles, you will need to access the official website for both the software and calibration files.
- Software: The Hyundai J2534 Reprogramming and Diagnostic Tool software provides the interface for flashing control modules.
- For 2018 and newer models, this software also includes diagnostic functions.
- Subscriptions: The Hyundai Tech Info website offers various subscription tiers for accessing software and service information.
- Service Information Access: $60 for one month, or $600 for one year.
- J2534 Diagnostic Software: $270 for one month, or $1,680 for one year. This subscription includes diagnostic capabilities for 2018 and newer vehicles.
- Programming per download: Some sources indicate a fee for each programming file download.
- Security features: For immobilizer or key programming, access requires credentials from a NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP).
- Availability: The J2534 service is available for all 2004 and newer emissions-related ECUs, though support extends to older, reprogrammable models.
Hardware Requirements
In addition to a Windows-based PC, specific hardware is needed for Hyundai J2534 programming.
- J2534 pass-thru device: You need a SAE J2534-1/2 compliant interface. Hyundai has tested and approved various aftermarket devices, including those from DG Technologies, Drew Technologies, and Bosch.
- High-speed internet: Required for downloading software and calibration files from the Hyundai server.
- Stable power supply: A constant voltage of at least 13.5V, provided by a high-amperage battery maintainer, is crucial to prevent interruptions that could damage the ECU.
Reprogramming Process and Considerations
- Obtain a subscription and download the necessary J2534 software from the Hyundai Tech Info website.
- Connect hardware: Attach the J2534 device to your PC and the vehicle’s OBD-II port. Connect a high-amperage battery maintainer to the vehicle.
- Perform the flash: Follow the on-screen instructions in the software. It is crucial not to interrupt the process by operating other accessories or disconnecting the device.
- Post-programming procedures: After the flash is complete, the vehicle may require procedures like a throttle body learning sequence and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
- Newer vehicles (2018+ SGW): Modern Hyundai vehicles have a security gateway module (SGW) that can block reprogramming access. Recent software updates from Hyundai address this, and validated users with a NASTF Diagnostic Professional or VSP account can access the gateway for relevant functions.

The Hyundai Motor America (HMA) J2534 reprogramming software allowsfor a common method of communication between aPC and a vehicle electronic control unit (ECU). U.S. EPA and CARB regulationsmandate that all 2004 and later vehicle powertrain ECUs support emission-related reprogramming.
Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCI)
The Hyundai J2534 Reprogramming and Diagnostic Tool software supports a SAE J2534-1/2 compliant passthru VCI device for use on Hyundai vehicles sold in the US. The devices, firmware, and application programming interfaces listed below have been tested by HMA and under no circumstances do we recommend the use of a non-approved J2534 device. HMA has worked closely with the following J2534 device manufacturersto ensure the hardware and software comply with all J2534-1/2 specifications.
J2534 Diagnostic Tool Software:
Hyundai Motor America (HMA) is now offering a J2534 Diagnostic Tool software application for the diagnosis of Hyundai vehicles. In order to use the J2534 Diagnostic Tool software, you will need to purchase a subscription. In addition to the J2534 Diagnostic Tool software subscription, a SAE J2534-1/2 compliant pass-thru vehicle communication interface (VCI) device is required to perform vehicle diagnostics.

If your version number is not J-N-H-02-00-0088, please click ‘Update’ to update to the latest version.
