Summary of Complaint
The powertrain (transmission) has failed. The vehicle has had an issue when shifting into reverse since around the time I purchased the pickup. The vehicle is still doing this, and it is shifting strangely. It will shift from 2, to 1, to 4. Now it will shift from 3, to 1, to 5. When downshifting as I come to a stop, it will stay in 4, unless I manually shift to N, and back into D. At this time, it will shift back to 1 at a stop. It looses power at these times. It has presented with the "powertrain malfunction indicator light" (wrench). My safety and that of others was put at risk by shifting erratically, causing the vehicle to slow down, nerfing the ability to speed up. Losing the ability to speed up from a dead stop under normal driving conditions, increasing the likelihood of an accident from oncoming traffic when turning at an intersection, driving through an intersection from a stop, or from traffic behind the vehicle. I have not been able to have it reproduced by a dealer or independent service center. When I took it to a service center, they were unable to pull any codes relating to the issue. I have yet to take it to a dealer service center. The vehicle nor component have been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance or anyone else. The dash light up with a "Powertrain Malfunction Indicator Light," in the shape of a large orange wrench. Once acknowledged, and the "OK" button has been depressed, the indicator goes away and a smaller wrench stays illuminated in the lower right corner of the display. This and similar issues have been occurring with this vehicle since the first two years of ownership. I had no idea where to begin to have the vehicle repaired or inspected for these issues. My ignorance (and that of many more of their customers) seems to be Ford's benefit. Ford did issue a "Customer Satisfaction Program" (16N02) for this issue, but I had no idea about it until my vehicle did not qualify any longer, due to mileage.
