Summary of Complaint
PASSENGER OCCUPANT DETECTION SYSTEM FAILURE, RESULTING IN ILLUMINATED AIR BAG MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP. EXCESSIVE RESISTANCE IN THE OCCUPANT SENSOR MAT OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, INDICATING AN INTERNALLY FAILING SENSOR AND RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE AIR BAG SYSTEM BECOMING DISABLED. AUDI HAS ISSUED RECALLS FOR OTHER VEHICLE MODELS IN THIS YEAR FOR THIS EXACT DEFECT, AND THE RESOLUTION IN THOSE INSTANCES IS TO INSTALL AN UPDATED PART WITH A PROTECTIVE COVER THAT WILL PREVENT PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE NEW SENSOR. AUDI HAS NOT EXPANDED THE RECALL TO INCLUDE THE AUDI A3 AS OF THE DATE OF THIS WRITING. THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE IS A 2015 AUDI A3 PREMIUM PLUS FWD SEDAN WITH SPORT SEATS AND 1.8L GASOLINE ENGINE. AUDI DOES NOT APPEAR TO OFFER A REPLACEMENT PART AT THIS TIME, POSSIBLY AN INDICATION THAT THE PART HAS BEEN DESIGNATED OBSOLETE IF THE VW AUDI GROUP IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THE ISSUE AND UPDATING THE PART. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS LEAVES CONSUMERS WITHOUT A REPAIR OPTION WHILE OPERATING A VEHICLE WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING SAFETY RESTRAINT SYSTEM.
