This is to revise and replace Campaign 1516, dated 08-Jul-2014. This revision is to:
1. Add SRTs.
If additional information is required, contact your Cummins Warranty Operations Group
Leader.

Description
This Campaign is being issued to address air compressors on ISX12 CM2250 and CM2350.
The Campaign authorizes the replacement of air compressors if the compressor date code or
the crankshaft date code is on or before 22/12.

Action
In order to qualify for repair under this field action, an engine:

1. will be covered Regardless of coverage status, and
2. must be identified in the attached ESN list.
After verifying that the engine meets the above requirements, perform the following actions:
1. Steam clean the engine.
2. Inspect air compressor date code. Please see Attachment B for location of compressor
date code. Replace compressor if date code is on or before 22/12.
3. If compressor date code is 23/12 or later, remove front sump plug and inspect crankshaft
date code. Please see Attachment C for inspection procedure.
4. If the crankshaft date code is 23/12 or later, replace the sump plug using repair kit PN
4089675. The instructions for the sump plug are in Attachment D.
5. If the crankshaft date code is 22/12 or earlier, replace the air compressor and gaskets
with PN's 2870020NX, 3685614, and 4988280. Please see Procedure 012-014 in the
Service Manual.

Material Disposition
Materials removed as a result of this field action must be scrapped.

Identification of ISX12 Air Compressor Crankshafts
1)

Using a large screw driver or similar device, knock the sump plug out of
the crankcase closest to the gear train via the cast slot as shown.

2)

Rotate crankshaft so that the date code on the crankshaft if visible.

3)

With a flashlight, review 4 digit casting on crankshaft. IF those digits are
“22/12” or earlier, then compressor must be replaced. Otherwise,
continue to next step. (Ex: The picture below has a crankshaft date code
of “18/10” therefore, it would need replaced.)

4)

IF those digits are “23/12” or later, then compressor is OKAY, and not
subject to replacement. Procure Cummins Sump Plug Kit #4089675, and

follow the instructions (Attachment D) to clean, seal, and install a
replacement cup plug. Write the crankshaft date code on the sump plug.
5)

Air compressors that are replaced due to the old crankshaft must be
scrapped.

For all Singles with a Cast Iron Crankcase
Kit contains one sump plug and this instruction sheet.
Liquid sealant, required is not included in this kit.

Disassembly
1. Using a large screw driver or similar device,
knock the sump plug out of the crankcase
via the cast slot as shown

Reassembly
1. Inspect the sump plug bore for nicks and
burrs, and wipe clean.

2. Apply Loctite 648 or Enro-Lock 64.80
sealant to the cylindrical surface of the
sump plug. Liquid sealant is not included
in this kit.

3. Press the plug in the crankcase until the
flange of the plug seats to the crankcase
shoulder.
