Transmission May Slip Into Unexptected Gear
A miscalibrated actuator may cause the transmission to shift into an unexpected gear, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
PACCAR, Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2022 Kenworth T180, 2021-2023 Kenworth T280, 2022-2023 Kenworth T380, 2022-2023 Peterbilt 536, and 537 vehicles. Internal components of the transmission actuator may slip, causing the actuator to become miscalibrated.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the transmission actuator, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 8, 2022. Owners may contact PACCAR’s customer service at 1-425-828-5888 (Kenworth); 1-940-591-4220 (Peterbilt). PACCAR’s number for this recall is 22KWD and 22PBD.

05-17-22: Paccar Plant notified Safety & Compliance of potential issue with transmission actuators, per feedback from the supplier.
05-18-22: Meeting held with supplier, Supplier Quality and Safety & Compliance to discuss. Containment at plants is complete, and all affected trucks are on hold at Paccar plants per supplier’s recommendation. Review of inventory at Paccar Parts begins to quarantine all suspect inventory. Safety & Compliance opens investigation.
05-20-22: Short term corrective action proposed is to rework existing inventory to add a keyway to prevent relative motion between the ring gear and shaft. Validation plan is reviewed between the supplier and Paccar.
05-31-22: Short term corrective action passes preliminary validation testing. Parts procurement in process for rework. Reworked parts will have a green dot on the part identification label for traceability.
06-08-22: Internal team completes summary of investigation. Affected population firmed.
06-09-22: Safety committee meeting held. The committee concurs that a safety related defect exists and the affected population shall be recalled.

Subject: Safety Recall 22KWD – T180/T280/T380 Transmission Actuator Slip NHTSA Recall number 22V425 Dear Kenworth Customer, Kenworth Truck Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2021-2023 T180, T280, and T380 chassis built from 06/17/2020 through 04/15/2022 equipped with Allison series 1000 or series 2000 automatic transmissions. Internal components of the transmission actuator may slip, causing the actuator to become miscalibrated. On affected vehicles, if the transmission actuator becomes miscalibrated, transmission may shift into an unexpected gear. This may increase the risk of a crash. Kenworth has initiated a recall to remedy the defect. Please contact your Kenworth dealer. To find your Kenworth dealer, please visit Dealer Locator at www.Kenworth.com. The transmission actuator will be removed and sent to the supplier for rework. Total truck down time could be 3 business days or more depending on shipping times and dealer scheduling. This repair will be performed at no charge to you. The problem is… The transmission actuator may slip causing the actuator to become miscalibrated and the transmission may shift into an unexpected gear. What your dealer will do… Dealers will remove the transmission actuator and send it to the supplier for rework, then install the reworked actuator. Owners who incurred costs to obtain a remedy for the problem addressed by the recall in advance of receiving notification may seek reimbursement through the process outlined in the general reimbursement plan on file. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy components will be reworked to add a key to secure internal components relative to each other and have a mark on the part label to indicate they have been reworked. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Transmission actuators used to build production parts will include a key to secure internal components relative to each other.
