Insufficient air volume can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain 2022 Granite trucks. The air tanks have an insufficient volume of air for the brake system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, “Air Brake Systems.”
Remedy
Dealers will install new air tanks, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact Mack’s customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack’s number for this recall is SCC 0435.

Description
This issue is a result of an internal systems calculation table that was providing an incorrect baseline for a subset of vehicles. Air Volume calculation for system air is 8 % below the “12 Times the combined volume of all service brake chambers”.
This is a noncompliance with FMVSS 121.
The remedy is still under development.

Dealer Responsibilities
- The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act require dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
- Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

- Owner notification letters will be released on or before July 1, 2022

RECALL INFORMATION
(May 2022)
Mack has determined that certain model year 2023 GR Vehicles were built using an incorrect air volume calculation. This issue is a result of an internal systems calculation table that was providing an incorrect baseline for a subset of vehicles.
Air Volume calculation for system air is 8% below the “12 Times the combined volume of all service brake chambers” and is a noncompliance with FMVSS 121.
Mack Trucks has not received any complaints or reports of vehicle crashes because of this safety issue.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Mack’s stringent quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to relocate air tank bracket, install new air tank, and reroute the air lines.

Certain Mack North America vehicles manufactured between January 10, 2022, and March 01, 2022.

Important
There are two different air tank configurations for this recall.
A: is two tanks mounted in frame.
B: is three tanks mounted in frame.
If you have a two-tank configuration, please follow the instructions below to install a bigger secondary in frame air tank.

Repair Instructions
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Place the gear lever in neutral.
4. Install the wheel chocks.
5. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal.
6. Drain the compressed air tanks.
7. Locate the position 4 (secondary) air tank.
8. Disconnect all air lines for the tank.
9. Loosen tank straps and remove tank.
10. Transfer all air fittings from the old tank to the new tank.
11. Remove the rear air tank mounting bracket and hardware.
12. Drill 3 new mounting holes 250mm behind the existing ones. (See Image below)
13. Install old mounting hardware back in existing holes and torque to spec.
14. Install old tank mounting bracket in new holes, attach with new hardware and torque to spec.

15. Install new air tank into frame and torque straps to spec.

16. Reconnect all air lines to tank.
Note
If the airlines do not reach the new tank they should be replace with the correct length.
17. Install drain valve into tank and secure the s-hook lanyard back to the frame.
18. Connect the cable to the negative terminal.
19. Start engine and build up air pressure to governor cutout.
20. Shut off engine and check for any audible air leaks.
21. Release truck back into service.
Note: Dealers are to perform Safety Recalls on all subject vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner regardless of mileage, age of vehicle or ownership (original purchaser or subsequent purchasers). Whenever vehicles are subject to a Safety Recall are brought to your dealership for service, or taken into your dealership vehicle inventory, it is strongly recommended that every effort be made to perform the recall correction before the vehicle is sold or released to the owner.
Chronology :
On April 21st, 2022 Mack Assembly Plant notifies Product Safety Working Group Member of a potential calculation issue related to air volume calculations. All potentially impacted vehicles are put on hold at Mack Assembly Plant. April 25, 2022 Product Safety Working Group meets and decides to raise issue to Product Safety Committee. April 28, 2022 Product Safety Committee determines that a product non-compliance related to FMVSS 121 exists.

April 28, 2022 Product Safety Committee determines that a product non-compliance related to FMVSS 121 exists. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Repairs made prior to notification will be addressed according to Mack’s General Reimbursement Plan on file with NHTSA. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : New air tanks will be installed which will increase the volume of air to meet the requirements.
