Trailer and Tow Vehicle May Separate

Trailer separation from the tow vehicle can increase the risk of a crash.

Summary

KZRV, L.P. (KZRV) is recalling certain 2022 Stratus, Connect, Sonic, and SportTrek travel trailers. The coupler was improperly welded, which may cause the trailer to separate from the tow vehicle.

 

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the coupler, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 1, 2022. Owners may contact KZRV customer service at 1-800-768-4016 ext. 154 or 153. KZRV’s number for this recall is KZ-2022-01.

Problem

The vehicles subject to this recall were built with a defective coupler. This coupler may have
missing or incomplete welds which may cause the trailer to separate from the tow vehicle and could result in a crash resulting in property damage, personal injury, or death.

WARRANTY REIMBURSEMENT:

A notice of this recall has been sent to affected retail owners. A copy of the Owner’s letter is included for your review. They may request that you complete the repair. If so, please follow the warranty reimbursement procedure. If the unit and/or units are in your inventory, or if you are requested to perform the repair for the retail customer, please complete the advised repair and send in a warranty claim referencing this recall number for reimbursement. The time allowed for repair is 1 hour.

 

SERVICE ACTION:

The repair procedure is to inspect the coupler and if welds are missing to replace the coupler per the included repair instructions.

KZ was notified by NORCO Industries of a potential defect in Pacific Industries couplers utilized on certain frames manufactured by NORCO and Supplied to KZRV. The inspection and repair instructions are shown below.

 

STEP 1: VISUAL INSPECTION

1. Inspection location: Bottom side of coupler located at the front end of the a-frame.

 

2. Underneath the coupler, use a flashlight to inspect the welds at each side of the bottom coupler plate.

a. To Pass Inspection: A weld bead should run along each side of the plate.

 

To Fail Inspection: A weld bead will not run along the side of the plate and there will only be tack welds

 

NORCO INDUSTRIES APPROVED REPAIR PROCEDURE

STEP 2: REPAIR IF VISUAL INSPECTION FAILS

1. In a circumstance that the coupler is only tack welded on the underneath plate, the coupler will need to be replaced by a qualified welder.

2. Safely support the front of the RV with jack stands and remove the tongue jack.

3. Carefully cut through the perimeter welds of the coupler allowing the defective coupler to be removed. Use caution not to damage the draw tubes when cutting through the welds.

 

4. Using a grinder, remove any excess weld from the draw tubes once the coupler has been removed

5. Prep the replacement coupler by removing the paint from the weld locations.

6. Weld the replacement coupler in place just as the original was welded.

7. Paint raw steel areas.
