Cab Entry Step May Unexpectedly Move
A partially unsecured cab step can unexpectedly move while entering or exiting the cab, increasing the risk of injury.

Summary
PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2022 Peterbilt 579 vehicles equipped with chassis fairings. The bolts that hold the chassis fairing step assembly in the closed position may loosen and fracture the latch attachment, causing the fairing assembly to flex.
Remedy
Dealers will add new fasteners and a bracket, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 11, 2022. Owners may contact Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220. PACCAR’s number for this recall is 22PBA.

Situation
3,703 (3,511 US/ 192 Canada) Model 579 chassis model year 2021 vehicles built from 02/15/2021 through
11/05/2021 with chassis fairings.
Resolution
Safety Recall
Service all affected chassis that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis.
1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list.
2. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review SIR for “Complete” or “In Process” next to the “22PBA” campaign code prior to performing this repair.
3. Follow the procedures below to add the support bracket to the fairing structure.
Chronology :
10/27/2021: Engineering communicated to Safety & Compliance that a fastener and bracket change were being implemented on chassis fairings in production.
11/7/2021: Engineering sent a trip report from a recent customer visit to Safety & Compliance regarding loosening bolts.
11/19/2021: Engineering released a longer term change to the molded fairing support structure for quotes.
12/1/2021: Safety & Compliance met with engineering for updates on design, field issues, etc.
12/16/2021: Safety & Compliance discussed the investigation with NHTSA during a quarterly meeting.
12/22/2021: Safety & Compliance confirms chassis list of possible affected vehicles.
12/23/2021: Evaluation performed on a truck in the lab with one latch removed in addition to a test drive.
12/29/2021: Field reported additional customer truck with a loose latch.
1/4/2022: Meeting held with partial Safety Committee in attendance.
1/6/2022: Second evaluation performed on a truck in lab by engineering
1/12/2022: Safety Committee agreed a safety related defect exists.

Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Customers will have new fasteners and a bracket added to their current chassis fairing assemblies. Owners who incurred costs to obtain a remedy for the problem addressed by the recall in advance of receiving notification may seek reimbursement through the process outlined in the general reimbursement plan on file. How Remedy Component Differs The remedy components include new fasteners with “patch lock’ added to keep them securely fastened. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Interim correction began 10/27/2021 using bolts with torque retention feature and adding a bracket for reinforcement. Additional holes are drilled in step assembly structure to fasten this bracket in addition to fasteners that retain the latch through the bracket.
