Plt. 8 Water Heater & Fireplace Breaker Repair Instructions
NHTSA Recall # 21V‐814
KZ Recall # KZ‐2021‐06
Step 1: Identify the breaker labeled “Water Heater” in the distribution panel. If the circuit breaker is a 15‐amp breaker, then the distribution panel is correct and no repair is needed. If breaker is 20 amps, verify that the water heater is de‐energized when the breaker is in the off position.
Step 2: Identify the breaker labeled “Fireplace” in the distribution panel. If the circuit breaker is a 15‐amp breaker, then distribution panel is correct and no repair is needed. If the circuit breaker is 20 amps, then verify that the fireplace is de‐energized when the breaker is in the off position.
Step 3: Turn off the 30‐amp main service breaker. Remove distribution panel cover and locate water heater breaker and fireplace breaker. Trace wire from breakers to where wire enters the rear of distribution panel. Determine the color of exterior Romex sheathing. If sheathing color is yellow, wire is correctly sized and repair is not necessary. Re‐install distribution panel cover and turn on main 30 amp breaker. If sheathing color is white or green proceed to step 3.
Step 4: Remove both wires from 15/20 duplex breakers. Remove 15/20 duplex breakers from distribution panel. Install 15/15 duplex breakers. Install water heater wire in bottom 15‐amp breaker. Install remaining wire in top 15‐amp breaker. Repeat previous steps for fireplace breaker. Re‐install distribution panel cover. Turn all breakers on. Verify that breakers labeled Water Heater and fireplace in the distribution panel de‐energizes the water heater and fireplace respectively when in the off position. If so, turn on breaker and repair is complete.
