Outside Cooktop Gas Lines Not Tightened Properly

A gas leak can increase the risk of a fire.

Summary

Heartland Recreational Vehicles, LLC (Heartland) is recalling certain 2021 Mallard, Wilderness, Trail Runner and 2020-2021 North Trail trailers. The LP gas lines may not have been tightened properly on the outside cooktops, which could result in a gas leak.

 

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and tighten the LP gas lines, and test the propane system for leaks, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 10, 2021. Owners may contact Heartland customer service at 1-877-262-8032.

LP outside cooktop connection

 

Description 

It has been decided on certain 2021 Mallard, 2020-2021 North Trail, 2021 Trail Runner, & 20202021 Wilderness travel trailers the outside cooktop LP connection could be loose. This could lead to an increased risk of injury, fire, and/or damage to property

 

Inspection & Repair 

• Open outside kitchen baggage door and pull out the outside cooktop. (See pictures below)

a. If the unit has the two burner cooktop you will need to perform the following steps to check the LP connection.

b. Remove the two screws located on either side of the cooktop and the two burner knobs on the stove. Lift off the top of the cooktop and set to the side.

c. Remove the two screws located on either side of the heat shield.

d. Use two ¾” wrenches, one on the fitting connected to the stove and one on LP line to tighten the LP line on the cooktop.

e. Once tight reinstall the heat shield and cooktop cover/knobs.

f. Connect the LP line to the quick connect and open the valve.

g. Perform LP drop test to ensure there are no leaks.

 

• If the unit has the Griddle you will need to perform the following steps to check the LP connection.

a. Open the outside kitchen baggage door and pull out the outside griddle. (See pictures below)

b. Locate the griddle regulator on the back of the griddle.

c. Use a 5/8” & ¾” wrench to tighten the LP connection.

d. Once tight connect the LP line to the quick connect and open the valve.

e. Perform LP drop test to ensure there are no leaks.

Like components can be used from shop supplies instead of ordering recall kit if dealer/service center have them available.

Cooktop

Remove the screws from the shield using a screw driver.

Remove the screws from the shield using a screw driver.

 

Use a ¾” and 5/8” wrench to tighten the LP connection.

 

 

Griddle

Use a ¾” and 5/8” wrench to tighten the LP connection.

 

For the cooktop & griddle there needs to be a rubberized P-clamp installed to ensure the LP line does not kink. See attached photos showing the clamp installation. (If the unit already has the P-clamp in place there does not need to be another one added)

• 6/1/2021 -Received incident report regarding outside stove on LP connection leaking.

 

• 6/2/2021 –A Flat rate analysis of other claims in the system showed there was one other claim in the system for the same possible issue.

 

• 6/4/2021- Pictures were provided from the original incident report from 6/1/2021 that showed what looked to be the same issue as the second report.

 

• 6/7/2021 – 6/9/2021 –The plants that used this cooktop and the new griddle version of this cooktop were inspected for proper installation.

 

• 6/10/2021 –Several plants are using a 90 degree swivel fitting before they install the LP hose. Spoke with Sam about eliminating this fitting and just connecting the LP directly to the back of the cooktop/griddle to eliminate a possible point of leaking going forward.

 

• 6/10/2021 –New installation instructions are being written to address proper installation of LP lines and the addition of a rubberized P-clamp to ensure there is no kinking of the LP line once installed.

 

• 6/10/2021 –All plants are installing the LP connection correctly except for plants 21 & 501.

 

• 6/10/2021 – One incident report is for a unit built out of plant 7a and the other two are from units built in 21.

 

• Based on the information on when the 7a started using the cooktop (7/20) we included all units from 7a in the unit population for possible recall.

 

• Safety committee met on 6/15/2021 and voted for a recall.
