SAFETY RECALL NOTICE
29 October 2020
Subject: Motor Yebicle satety Recan 2oy.s2s -Pyros;i c001aot Hoses
Dear
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle
Safety Act.
Motor Coach Industries (“MCI”) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on
certain MCI coaches originally equipped with coolant hoses manufactured by Purosil LLC. MCI records
indicate that you are the owner or operator of the following vehicle(s) included in this recall:
Make: MCI
Bus Model: J4500
The defect is that the coolant hose may rupture due to the hose liner seam not being fully fused during the
manufacture curing cycle.
A failure of the hose would result in a low coolant warning, followed by an engine shut down
sequence. Engine coolant has the potential to be spilled onto the roadway causing a traction
hazard to other motorists. Additionally, the coach may not be able to be driven from the point of
disablement, which would require the loading and unloading of passengers and baggage at the
breakdown location. The spilled coolant may increase the risk of a crash. Additionally,
transferring passengers from the disabled bus can increase their risk of injury.
MCI urges you to have the recall work performed on your vehicle(s) as quickly as possible.
MCI will remedy the affected coaches at no cost to customers by installing a hose from a different
manufacturer. MCI recommends that owners of the affected coaches make an appointment as soon as
possible by calling the MCI Customer Service Line at 1-800-241-294 7, to have the repairs performed by
trained technicians who have the necessary equipment. MCI estimates that it will take approximately 1.5 to

1 Associated Investigation
Heater hose rupture
NHTSA ID: PE20001
Dated opened: March 13, 2020
An Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) review of Early Warning Reporting (EWR) submissions by Motor Coach Industries (MCI) on model year (MY) 2017-2019 J4500 buses identified ruptured heater hoses on multiple motor coaches leading to the vehicles becoming disabled. ODI follow up with fleets found that a low coolant level light with an audible warning would provide notice to the bus driver to pull off the roadway before the bus shut down to prevent catastrophic engine damage. According to the fleets interviewed, there is not enough time between the warning and the engine shutting down to allow the driver to pull to a safe location. Multiple reports/interviews describe buses requiring passenger transfer to a second bus at roadside.
Discussions with MCI identified the heater hoses as being problematic with a high failure rate. During fleet interviews and additional field report searches, it was found that, in addition to the heater hoses failing, the radiator could also potentially crack resulting in most of the 25 gallons of coolant to be lost. In both failure scenarios, enough coolant can be lost to cause the engine to shut down quickly and prevent the driver from moving to a safe location before having to transfer the passengers to a second vehicle. This can compromise the safety of vehicle occupants and other moving vehicles.
A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to determine if a defect in the subject vehicle presents an unreasonable risk to vehicle occupants and other moving vehicles on the road.
