Summary
Conel, LLC dba McElrath Trailers (McElrath Trailers) is recalling certain 2016-2020 VX50-800 and VX30-800 trailers. The welded area of a structural joint of the trailer frame may crack from fatigue.
Remedy
McElrath Trailers will notify owners, and Vermeer dealers will add additional trailer frame gussets to reinforce the welding area, free of charge. The recall began March 27, 2020. Owners may contact McElrath Trailers customer service at 1-888-686-7278.

Trailer Frame Reinforcement Kit (VMK00-0504)
Background:
McElrath has decided that a defect, that relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain model year 2017 – 2020 McElrath VX30-800 and VX50-800 model trailers. McLaughlin is administering this campaign on behalf of McElrath.
TRAILER FRAME FAILURE MAY OCCUR
During towing, higher than expected frame loading may result in bending and/or fatigue cracks of the trailer frame main beam. If a fracture occurs, unpredictable trailer handling may result.
DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY POSSIBLE
When towing the vacuum excavator on public roadways, a crash may occur resulting in death or serious injury if the trailer frame fails. Property or equipment damage may also occur.
Solution:
IMMEDIATE MACHINE MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED
VMK00-0504 has been created to provide the necessary parts and instructions to reinforce the trailer frame. This kit must be installed as soon as possible.
Please be reminded that it is a violation of Federal law for you to sell or lease the machines covered by this notification until this recall has been performed on these machines. Substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law.

Each dealership should determine the quantity of Kits to order initially depending upon the number of units that may be available for immediate upgrade. Do not order more Kits than needed for immediate installation.
- Contact your affected customer(s) to schedule a mutually acceptable time to upgrade their machine. Note: Letters will be sent to the customer(s) on or about March 26, 2020. Also refer to Owner Notification section below.

Note: Future notices to dealers and owners are dependent upon the receipt of Warranty Claims by the Vermeer Corporate Warranty Department.
REIMBURSEMENT
Upon completion of each Kit installation, a Warranty Claim must be submitted to the Vermeer Corporation Warranty Department for reimbursement of the cost of the Kit and labor, 3.5 hours.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
Sample Letter: Included at the end of this Bulletin is a sample letter which will be sent by Vermeer Corporation directly to the Owners on or about March 26, 2020, via USPS certified/registered mail. The owner notification will be translated into:

All translated owner notices will also include English owner notification.
This owner notification/letter instructs the owner to contact their local dealership to arrange for a time to have the Kit installed. After receiving VMK00-0504 from the McLaughlin Parts Center, you must contact your affected customer(s) immediately and schedule a mutually acceptable time to upgrade their machine.
We regret any inconvenience these corrective measures may cause you. This required work is for safety of the towing vehicle occupants and other drivers and passengers on the public roadways. We hope you agree the safety benefits surpass the inconvenience.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
McElrath has decided that a defect, that relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain model year 2017 – 2020 McElrath VX30-800 and VX50-800 vacuum excavator trailers. McLaughlin is administering this campaign on behalf of McElrath.
TRAILER FRAME FAILURE MAY OCCUR
During towing, higher than expected frame loading may result in bending and/or fatigue cracks of the trailer frame main beam. If a fracture occurs, unpredictable trailer handling may result.
DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY POSSIBLE
When towing the vacuum excavator on public roadways, a crash may occur resulting in death or serious injury if the trailer frame fails. Property or equipment damage may also occur.
IMMEDIATE MACHINE MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED
VMK00-0504has been created to provide the necessary parts and instructions to replace to reinforce the trailer frame. The kit must be installed as soon as possible.
Please contact your authorized, independent Vermeer dealer immediately to arrange a mutually acceptable time and location to install VMK00-0504 at no cost to you for labor or materials. The installation of this kit is estimated at 3.5 hours of labor. If the Vermeer dealer travels to the unit to install the kit, costs may be incurred by the owner. You must have your machine upgraded for these safety features.

SPECIAL TOOLS AND CONDITIONS:
None
WARNING: Failure to use shutdown procedure can result in unexpected hazard(s).
Death or serious injury could result due to entanglement, crushing, cutting, or other
hazardous contact. Follow Shutdown Procedure after operating, before performing
any service or maintenance, and before transporting.
WELDING INSTRUCTIONS
The following documents are required and attached to this repair kit to provide welding
repair requirements.

STOPPING THE MACHINE
NOTICE: For your safety and the safety of others, use the shutdown procedure before
servicing, cleaning, unclogging, or inspecting the machine.
A variation of this procedure may be used if instructed within this manual, or if an emergency
requires it.
Step 1: Reduce engine speed to idle.
Step 2: Verify all switches are in OFF/down position.
Step 3: Move Reverse Flow Control Valve handle to NEUTRAL.
Step 4: Allow engine to idle for 5 minutes before shutting it OFF after full-load
operation.
NOTICE: Failure to allow engine to idle for 5 minutes may result in
turbocharger damage.
Step 5: Turn Keyswitch OFF and remove ignition key.
Step 7: Press the E-Stop button.
Step 8: Relieve water pressure from water-assisted tools by squeezing trigger.
WARNING: Avoid high pressure water. High pressure water from digging tool or wash wand can
penetrate body tissue and result in death or serious injury. Fluid injected under the skin must be
removed immediately by a surgeon familiar with this type of injury.
Never point the digging tool or wand at anyone or at any part of the body. Never use the high
pressure wand to clean any part of your body or clothing.

Components in this kit have been hidden to help identify parts that are being
removed or added.
Procedure 1:
1. Raise the spoil tank to the full
UP position.
NOTICE: Always install safety
bar and safety lock pin before
working under raised tank or
raised door.
2. Position the safety lock on the
hydraulic cylinder.
3. The diagram on the right
shows location (A) where
reinforcement supports will be
installed.
4. All surfaces must be clean
where reinforcement supports
will be installed or where
cracked welds must be
repaired.
5. Clean with soap and water.
Do not use harsh chemicals.

THREE STAGE CYCLONIC FILTRATION.
Engineered to prolong filter and blower life, the
system is suitable for wet and dry applications.
The cyclones use a tuned vortex system in which
the outer vortex spiral forces small particles to fall
into a separate canister. The filtered stream then
passes up through the inner cyclone tube and
carried to the final poly filter.
LOCKABLE CONTROL PANEL. All machine
controls and gauges are secured and out of the
elements.
CAM-OVER REAR DOOR. Provides a 360-degree
positive seal, even under reverse pressure without
additional clamping requirements. The highly reliable
cam-over door has no in-tank moving parts, so all
maintenance is external.
NO HASSLE HOSE. Hang the suction hose on the
side of the machine when moving between jobsites
instead of coiling or disconnecting it, increasing
productivity and reducing operator fatigue.
IN-TANK WASH-DOWN. Delivers a highpressure
water spray to the tank interior helping
simultaneously dump material and clean the inside
of the tank. Saves clean up time and makes
it easier to remove difficult debris.
AUTO BELT TENSIONERS. Keeps proper belt
tension at all times and extends belt life.
