Brake Caliper Corrosion may Cause Brake Drag

Excessive brake drag can increase the risk of crash.

Summary

Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Street 500 (XG500), Street 750 (XG750), and 2017-2019 Street 750A (XG750A) motorcycles. The brake calipers may corrode internally after exposure to certain driving environments such as coastal regions or road salt, resulting in increased brake drag.

Remedy

Harley-Davidson has notified owners, and dealers will install new front and rear brake calipers, free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on January 15, 2019 to notify them of the issue. Owners will receive a second notification when parts are available. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0174.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Worldwide Dealers:

Harley-Davidson has learned that the brake calipers (P/Ns 41300158, 41300159 & 41300190) on certain model year 2016 – 2019 Harley-Davidson Street model motorcycles (see model list below) built 05/19/15 through 12/06/18 in the US and 05/15/15 through 12/07/18 in India may experience corrosion in the caliper bore area if subjected to a corrosive external environment over time, especially in coastal environments or coastal environments where road salt is used.  This corrosion could result in the pistons dragging in the caliper bore.  If this condition remains undetected it could lead to increased brake drag, possibly resulting in a crash.

We have voluntarily declared that this condition constitutes a safety defect to allow us to formally recall (Campaign 0174) all affected motorcycles. The remedy is to first confirm that the motorcycles are covered by this recall. If covered, perform the recommended service per the service bulletin using the recall kit (Part No’s. 91500097 and 91500098). Initial estimates are that the first wave of recall kit shipments may begin on or about April 2019. However, HarleyDavidson is diligently working with the supplier to define more exact timing for recall kit shipments and will share additional details on H-DNet when more information is available. A service bulletin (M1486) outlining the repair and credit procedures will be posted one week prior to part shipments; please reference the bulletin for a detailed description of the defect.

In the interest of our mutual customers’ safety, and as required by federal law, you may sell but not deliver any motorcycles until the remedy is complete. Please refer to H-Dnet / My Toolbox / Warranty Campaign Center. Select “Safety Campaign Open VIN list,” then select “0174” Campaign to view the VIN list.

In accordance with federal regulations administered by NHTSA and other appropriate market- specific government agencies, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. or authorized HarleyDavidson dealers will provide notice to all owners of record of affected products with direction to arrange for the recall service.

Pending approval from NHTSA, the owner letter will include the following direction:
