Receptacle Wire Correction
Tools needed:
Plastic windshield tool
Utility Knife
#1 Robertson (square) screwdriver bit
Butyl tape (18″ of129-0159)
Touch Up Paint (matched to the coach)
Wire Stripper
Polarity Tester
IMPORTANT
- Unplug unit from 120V shore power
- Turn off battery disconnect (prevents Generator and Inverter from supplying 120V power to the receptacle)
Score the paint along the top of the receptacle cover
Remove the two receptacle cover screws. Put screws aside for later
Use the plastic windshield tool to pry the cover off the sidewall.
Remove the two receptacle mounting screws.
Pull receptacle out of the box.
Loosen the silver and brass screws to remove the black and white wires from the receptacle.
Trim the white and black exposed conductor to 5/8″ (16mm). There is a gauge on the backside of the receptacle.
Put a loop in the white and black wires starting 2/3 the way from the insulation.
Wrap the wires 2/3 around the screws:
- White/neutral wire on the silver screws
- Black/power wire on the brass screws (connection information is also stamped on the back of the plug).
Tighten both screws to the receptacle.
Gently wiggle each wire to make sure the screws are secured correctly and don’t move with the wire.
Fold the wires back into the box being careful that they do not kink.
Remove Butyl from cover and sidewall with the plastic windshield tool.
Place a single layer of butyl tape (129-0159) around the perimeter of the cover.
Press cover firmly in place and resecure with original screws.
Trim excess butyl away. Use caution on fresh paint to prevent scratching.
Plug into 120V shore power, allow for up to 60 seconds for surge protector delay, then polarity test the outlet.
Function test the exterior outlet to verify correct wiring by creating a draw with a 120V appliance (polarity tester draw too low)
GFCI breaker will trip if there is a fault within the circuit.
Touch-up paint around the receptacle if necessary.
Chronology :
A NEW EMPLOYEE STARTED ON FEB. 21/2023 BUT ONLY STARTED WORKING ON THE PROCESS OF WIRING THE EXTERIOR GFCI RECEPTACLE ON FEB. 27/2023. UNITS AFFECTED – 1 Production Dates : FEB 27, 2023 – APR 17, 2023 Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : THERE IS TOO MUCH 120V INSULATED CONDUCTOR REMOVED AND HAVING TOO MUCH COPPER WIRE EXPOSED AT THE GFCI EXTERIOR RECEPTACLE. A CLASS B DEVIATION OF RVIA CODE 551.40 FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : A SHORT MAY OCCUR WHEN THE WIRES IN THE EXTERIOR RECEPTACLE MAKE CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER OR THE METAL RECEPTACLE BOX CAUSING AN ARC. THE ARC WILL CAUSE THE EXTERIOR GFCI RECEPTACLE TO TRIP THE BREAKER. Description of the Cause : A NEW EMPLOYEE MISINTERPRETED THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE SOP01156 (STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE) AND REMOVED TOO MUCH OF THE INSULATED COVER EXPOSING TOO MUCH UNINSULATED COPPER WIRE. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : THE GFCI CIRCUIT WILL BE TRIPPED IF THE WIRES CONTACT EACH OTHER OR THE RECEPTACLE BOX. Involved Components : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-328 Page 4 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Name : INSULATED COPPER WIRE Component Description : INSULATED COPPER WIRE Component Part Number : NR Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : A NEW EMPLOYEE STARTED ON FEB. 21/2023 BUT ONLY STARTED WORKING ON THE PROCESS OF WIRING THE EXTERIOR GFCI RECEPTACLE ON FEB. 27/2023. ON APR. 12/2023, WHEN A DI-ELECTRIC SHORT WAS DETECTED ON THE PRODUCTION LINE BETWEEN THE EXPOSED CONDUCTOR OF THE POWER WIRE (BLACK) AND THE EXTERIOR OF THE BOX. WHEN INSPECTED IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE WIRES HAD TOO MUCH INSULATED CONDUCTOR REMOVED EXPOSING TOO MUCH COPPER WIRE. WHEN THE WIRES WERE INSERTED INTO THE RECEPTACLE THE WIRES TOUCHED AND CAUSED AN ARC, WHICH CAUSED A SHORT CIRCUIT TO HAPPEN. NO WARRANTY CLAIMS, FIELD OR SERVICE REPORTS HAVE BEEN MADE. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : DEALERS WITH INVENTORY WILL BE SENT A LETTER AND SOP (STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE) TO REMOVE THE EXTERIOR GFCI RECEPTACLE AND CUT OFF THE PORTION OF THE COPPER WIRE THAT IS TOO LONG.
