Summary
PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2023 Peterbilt 348, 367, 389, 548, 567, and Kenworth T370, T480, T800, T800B, T880, W900B, and W990 vehicles. The tie rod clamps may have been improperly heat-treated, causing them to fail and allowing the tie rods to separate.
Remedy
Dealers will replace both tie rod clamps, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 16, 2022. Owners may contact Kenworth’s customer service at 1-425-828-5888 and Peterbilt’s customer service at 1-940-591-4220. PACCAR’s numbers for this recall are 22PBJ and 22KWJ.

Clamp fracture could lead to tie rod separation from the cross tube and partial loss of vehicle steering capability, increasing the risk of a crash. Drivers and service personnel may notice a loss of vehicle alignment preceding a complete fracture of the clamp.
Situation
83 (39 US and 44 CAN) Model Year 2023 T370, T480, T800, T880, W900, and W990 chassis built from 01/05/2022 through 06/22/2022.

8/31/2022: Safety and Compliance was notified by Meritor of potential tie rod clamp failures.
9/1/2022 through 10/5/2022: Safety & Compliance opens investigation and creates chassis list based on dates provided by Meritor. Manufacturing checks assembly plants for vehicles to be quarantined.
10/7/2022: Safety & Compliance checked warranty system and found no claims or reports related to the issue.
10/10/2022: Peterbilt and Kenworth held joint Safety Committee meeting and determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists.
