Summary
Doosan Portable Power (Doosan) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Doosan Portable Power Portable Air Compressors. The wheel bearing seals may leak grease into the drum brakes.
Remedy
Dealers will install new seals, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 24, 2022. Owners may contact Doosan’s customer service at 1-704-883-3500.

Chronology :
Doosan Portable Power received a field report on 8/29/2022 of a portable air compressor with wheel bearing grease on brakes caused by an incorrect sized seal. Based on the field report, Doosan Portable Power initiated an internal investigation including contacting the axle supplier. Doosan Portable Power and the axle supplier determined noncompliance with supplier’s manufacturing requirements. The axle supplier installed the incorrect seal part number 010 036 00 (Doosan part number 46856856) (hereinafter “incorrect seal”) instead of correct seal part number 010 010 00 (Doosan part number 46676634) (hereinafter “correct seal”) on Doosan Portable Power built portable air compressors built between 9/30/2021 to 8/31/2022.

FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : On the affected portable air compressors the inner diameter of the axle seal was oversized creating a gap between the seal and the axle allowing the wheel bearing grease to enter the drum brakes. The wheel bearing grease will coat the brake drums and shoes causing loss of adequate braking during towing. This could increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Involved Components : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-717 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Name 1 : oil seal Component Description : wheel hub axle seal Component Part Number : 010 010 00 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Dexter Address : 2900 Industrial Parkway East Elkhart Indiana 46516 Country : United States Chronology : Doosan Portable Power received a field report on 8/29/2022 of a portable air compressor with wheel bearing grease on brakes caused by an incorrect sized seal. Based on the field report, Doosan Portable Power initiated an internal investigation including contacting the axle supplier. Doosan Portable Power and the axle supplier determined noncompliance with supplier’s manufacturing requirements. The axle supplier installed the incorrect seal part number 010 036 00 (Doosan part number 46856856) (hereinafter “incorrect seal”) instead of correct seal part number 010 010 00 (Doosan part number 46676634) (hereinafter “correct seal”) on Doosan Portable Power built portable air compressors built between 9/30/2021 to 8/31/2022. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Customer letters, dealer letters, and a Technical Service Bulletin are being developed to identify and correct the issue. Additionally, warnings will instruct users to immediately stop towing the affected portable air compressors until the repairs have been made. This solution will be done at no charge to the customer and the dealers will file for reimbursement through the Doosan warranty system. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The incorrect seal has a larger inner seal diameter than the correct seal. The remedy program will include instructions on how to identify if the incorrect seals are installed on the affected portable air compressors and detailed instructions on how to replace the seals and any damaged axle components.
